“I’m TEFL Certified But STILL Can’t Teach Grammar” 😭

After months of hard work, you’re a newly certified ESL teacher. Congratulations! 🎉 You’re officially ready to shape minds and change lives, but there’s just one tiny problem: teaching grammar scares the absolute hell out of you.
Cue the existential crisis.
Here’s the thing: teaching grammar is scary at first, but it doesn’t have to be. The good news is: there’s no grammar point on this planet that hasn’t already been taught (and explained) a million times before.
So what’s our advice for newly-certified teachers who need a solid strategy for teaching grammar? It’s this: learn from the pros. Here’s how!
Step 1: Watch and Learn (Aka, Do what the Pros Do)
Before you go into full panic mode over how to explain the present perfect, see how someone else does it first.
📺 Go to YouTube and type in “present perfect ESL lesson.”
Watch. Take notes. And ask yourself these questions:
Is the teacher’s explanation actually clear?
Do the example sentences make sense?
Are the comments full of confused people—or are they saying, “Omg, this helped SO much!”?
If it works, use it. Seriously— use their example sentences, borrow their analogies, or write down the script and teach their lesson verbatim if you have to. The best teachers learn from other teachers, and there’s no shame in using what’s already been proven to work. Work smarter, not harder, and save yourself the headache.
Step 2: Test It Out & Tweak as Needed
Now it’s time for the trial run.
🚀 During your lesson, try teaching the grammar point exactly the way you saw it in the YouTube video.
Afterward, do a quick gut check:
✔️ Did you feel like you knew what you were talking about?
✔️ Did your students actually get it? (Or were you just getting blank stares?)
✔️ Did anything feel clunky or awkward?
If something didn’t click, tweak it for next time. Every lesson is an experiment, and every class makes you a better teacher.
Step 3: Keep Watching. Keep Learning. Keep Winning.
The best way to get better at teaching grammar? Immerse yourself in it.
📌 Subscribe to your favorite ESL teachers on YouTube. Watch their videos in your downtime. Learn how they explain tricky topics. Soon enough, you’ll be able to teach grammar in your sleep. (Or at least without breaking into a nervous sweat.)
“But What If My Students Ask a Question I Don’t Know?” 😭
Ah yes, the teacher nightmare scenario. A student asks a grammar question, and your brain just… blanks.
First off, breathe. You do not need to be a walking grammar encyclopedia. Here’s what you do instead:
✅ Prepare ahead of time. Before class, ask ChatGPT:
"Hey, I’m teaching [grammar topic] to B1 students. What tricky questions should I expect?"
Boom. Now you’re ready.
✅ Be honest. If a student stumps you, just say:
"That’s a great question! Let me check and get back to you tomorrow." Then actually get back to them. There’s no shame in not knowing everything.
